Koen Van Den Broek

Koen Van Den Broek

Koen van den Broek (°1973, BE) creates
spaces on canvas with suspense and a strong
feeling for contrast, composition, and color.
His painted body of work has been internationally renowned for two decades. Themes
from ordinary life such as streets curbs,
vast landscapes and bridges, he intertwines
to a whole own visual language. In the
cinematographic way he frames reality and
by an ingenious play with abstraction and
reference. Van den Broek looks for details
such as cracks, architectural elements and
drop shadows, which emanate purely and naturally by coincidence. Light, space, and focus
are the necessary conditions in order to create
well-known images such as “Cracks” and
“Hardscapes”. Koen van den Broek studied at
the Koninklijke Academie Voor Schone Kunsten
van Antwerpen (BE), Sint-Joost, Breda (NL) en
Hoger Instituut Voor Schone Kunsten (BE).
