Voor de Gentse juweelontwerpster Maria Louisa Ponseele zijn juwelen een bekoorlijk schoonheidsaccent voor het lichaam. Ze is gefascineerd door vrouwelijke ijdelheid en haar juwelen zitten vol referenties naar het opmaakritueel. Met een milde ironie creëert ze juwelen waarbij ze bijvoorbeeld gebruik maakt van in edelmetaal gegoten wattenstaafjes en zalftubes of van een lange blonde haarlok die telkens, net als een kapsel, gekamd en ‘goed gelegd’ moet worden. Ze maakt binnen het medium van de edelsmeedkunst een zeer persoonlijke interpretatie van het Vanitas motief.

From her fascination with female vanity, she infuses her jewelry with references to the beauty ritual in front of the mirror, the maniac-like eliminating of imperfections meant to make one feel good and attractive to others. With mild irony, Louisa Maria creates jewelry using, for instance, swabs and ointment tubes cast in precious metal or a long blond lock of hair that time and again has to be combed and "put in place" like a real hairdo. In this way, she brings a very personal interpretation of Vanitas to the metalsmithing medium.
